What this discussion misses is that US Exxon was in talks to get back into Russian Sakhalin oil project before the tariffs were imposed on India. The whole Ukraine thing was just a red herring. Trump wants to buy cheap Russian oil and force India to buy expensive US energy. A repeat of what US did to EU.

How come India is being singled out by US when India isn't even the largest buyer of Russian natural gas or oil? And EU themselves know about India and still source refined oil from India. Why not sanction them?

Work has been done to understand the impact of these tariffs (not on petroleum or pharma ). The impact will be on less than 3% of Indian exports globally.

India’s economy is pretty well shielded from the US. They just aren’t the same economies. India has way more to gain from cheap Russian oil than it has to gain from a trade relationship with the US. Now if the US were to impose tariffs on outsourced cheap labor, that’s a different story.

Indian government needs to come out and tell people to boycott American brands like Starbucks, McDonalds, KFC etc… . When these US companies loose access to the fastest growing major economy and largest populated, youngest average age country in the world that is where the rubber meets the road. Then you will see Trump come squealing. If US-Russia talks are progressing well, which it sounds like they are, the facade of additional 25% tariff on India because of Russian oil purchase is no longer needed. 

This whole thing had nothing to do with India in the first place.

The 25% tariff are here to stay (and were always there to stay). 

Net net, bi lateral talks are no longer “needed” as additional 25% tariff will go away and base 25% tariff are going to stay, no matter what.

I don’t believe this will strengthen China-India relations. At current climate, 25% does not look so terrible for India. The Indian economy relies heavily on domestic consumption and exports are more about tech service, so a 25% tariff on India differs from one on Korea, Taiwan, Germany, or Japan which exports automobiles and semiconductors.

However, if more measures are taken against India due to Russian oil or weapons, China will likely exploit India significantly and India will have some difficulty retaliating or coping with a situation. Also, how Trump sets tariff rates against China, Pakistan and Bangladesh will influence India's situation.

Thats a poor article actually. Tariffs on China or India impact their exports to the US and thats all. For things to change, China would have to export more to India or the other way around… wont happen.

Politically China and India are at odds in the Himalayas and it wont change. China supports Indias ennemy, Pakistan…. So unless China change policy on these 2 topics, nothing will change between them.
But it might impact India - US relationships. Maybe make India closer to EU

Here is my answer with experience. Our govt need to Lift all ban from Chinese apps etc. In past I work for ecommerce startup and we used do crores/millions worth sale from Tiktok. After I started my startup, I sold huge no of electronics on ClubFactory which had Zero fees for platform, my projection was to reach 1 cr/1o millions sale in year until, in covid our govt banned it. While I was getting screw on Amazon than Flipkart. Now they have monopoly on everything. Lets bring Chinese here on 50:50 partnership give them access to our economy in exchange of Money and Tech. Only then we can survive and have our own industry. We can handle Trump.
